Ralph's Story

Ralph GehlbachAfter delving into the inspiring concepts in Pete Egoscue's book, Pain Free, I watched my wife, Rosie, faithfully complete one of the book's e-cise menus every morning. I decided to keep her company while she did her menus, not giving any thought to the idea that The Egoscue Method may relieve some of my own pain symptoms.

For several years, I had experienced poor circulation from blood clots and peripheral neuropathy and had been experiencing scary numbness in my feet up to my hips and pelvic area. While e-cising alongside Rosie for several weeks, I was surprised when I began to experience healthy sensations returning to all of those areas! Within several months, I could also see that my shoulders had moved back to a more level position. With this change in my posture, I noticed that the carpal-tunnel symptoms in both wrists, as well as pain from an eight-year-old rotator cuff injury, were gone. Amazingly, so was my chronic back pain!

I continued to improve overall, but felt that with personalized one-on-one attention, I could attain even stronger results -- maybe even get all of my feeling back. Fortunately, I discovered that Egoscue offered travel clinics in Dallas where we lived, so Rosie and I signed up for a series of sessions. At our first appointments, we found that my theory about the value of one-on-one therapy to be correct. The more personalized menus and the coaching on how to do the e-cises steadily enhanced our ability to regain proper function, pain relief, and body alignment. I was able to restore much of the function I thought was gone forever. Prior to Egoscue, I had felt doomed to experience numbness with pins and needles from my waist down and was scared to think that it would continue up my body. Now I could trust my feet, feeling grounded and grateful.

Feeling empowered by my Egoscue experience, I began to imagine what my next professional step might be. I was a semi-retired engineer who was now teaching at a local private high school. What Egoscue had taught me seemed so natural and common sensical to me that I was struck with an idea. It caught both Rosie and I by surprise when I told her that I was interested in learning everything I could about The Egoscue Method. I felt moved to help others experience the profound healing that both of us had re-claimed. I discovered that Egoscue had just begun to franchise and that the first clinic was located in Austin, just three hours south of Dallas. We attended an informational workshop there and established immediate rapport with the franchise owners, Rick and Theresa Mathes.

After careful thought and marital discussion, I decided to make the professional commitment. I attended the Egoscue University training program to become a certified Egoscue therapist, achieving my certification in 2005. Rick encouraged me to intern with him during the Dallas Travel Clinics, and we spent extensive time together during the mentoring process. He soon offered me a position to work with him as a fellow therapist at his travel clinics in Dallas and Houston. Then in January of 2007, Rick and Theresa asked Rosie and me to move to Austin and join their clinic's team! It was not easy for us to make such significant career and locale changes, but we felt honored to join the Egoscue family. To this day, I thoroughly enjoy drawing from my own healing and extensive training to help others make the vital journey out of chronic pain into an active, pain-free lifestyle.
